The flying disc was developed in 1948 by\u00a0Walter Morrison<\/a>. In 1957 January 13,\u00a0Wham-O<\/a>\u00a0bought the rights to the invention and released it later under the trademarked name\u00a0Frisbee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although playing catch with discs as a pastime and proto-golf games are documented from the early 1900s, and doubtlessly has occurred from time to time before, disc sports began to flower in the late 1960s. As numbers of young people became alienated from social norms, they resisted and looked for alternative recreational activities, including that of throwing a frisbee.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0What started with a few players, in the sixties, like Victor Malafronte, Z Weyand and\u00a0Ken Westerfield<\/a>\u00a0experimenting with new ways of throwing and catching a disc, later would become known as playing\u00a0disc freestyle<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Organized disc sports, in the 1970s, began with promotional efforts from\u00a0Wham-O<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Irwin Toy<\/a>\u00a0(Canada). These took the form of national tournaments and Frisbee show tours at universities, fairs and sporting events. Disc sports such as\u00a0disc freestyle<\/a>,\u00a0double disc court<\/a>,\u00a0disc guts<\/a>,\u00a0ultimate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0disc golf<\/a>\u00a0became this sports first events.[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Two sports, the team sport of\u00a0ultimate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0disc golf<\/a>\u00a0are very popular worldwide and are now being played semi-professionally.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0World Flying Disc Federation<\/a>,\u00a0Professional Disc Golf Association<\/a>, and the Freestyle Players Association, are the official sanctioning organizations for disc sports worldwide.<\/p>\n

Disc guts<\/a>\u00a0was invented by the Healy Brothers in the 1950s and developed at the International Frisbee Tournament (IFT) in\u00a0Marquette, Michigan<\/a>.\u00a0Ultimate<\/a>, the most widely played disc sport, began in the late 1960s with\u00a0Joel Silver<\/a>\u00a0and Jared Kass. In the 1970s it developed as an organized sport with the creation of the\u00a0Ultimate Players Association<\/a>\u00a0with Dan Roddick, Tom Kennedy and Irv Kalb.\u00a0Double disc court<\/a>\u00a0was invented and introduced in the early 1970s by Jim Palmeri. In 1974,\u00a0disc freestyle<\/a>\u00a0competition was created and introduced by\u00a0Ken Westerfield<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Discrafts<\/a>Jim Kenner.[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Judging standards were developed by the Freestyle Players Association. In 1976, the game of\u00a0disc golf<\/a>\u00a0was standardized with targets called “pole holes” invented and developed by\u00a0Wham-O<\/a>‘s Ed Headrick and the\u00a0Professional Disc Golf Association<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Beginning in 1974, the International Frisbee Association (IFA), under the direction of Dan Roddick, became the regulatory organization for all of these sports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
